The earth trembled. The stars hid out of fright.
The sky suddenly became so dark that the only lights were those on the city wall, such that Asudo couldnât clearly see what was happening.
But this terrifying commotion brought him ten years back, when he witnessed an avalanche. Terrifying white snow crushed everything, be it humans, livestock, or buildings. He realized that humans were so terribly insignificant before that despair-inducing calamity.
And now, he was feeling the same suffocating despair once more.
âActivate the barriers! Operate the defense towers! Inform the other city gates!â Asudo bellowed. âHave the others do the same too! AlsoâŠâ
He turned to the mage. âIlluminate that area!â
Something must be happening out there, andâŠ
Weng!
A faint blue barrier manifested, shrouding the city walls with a flickering light.
At the same time, lightning reminiscent of silver snakes crackled around the defense towers. Lightning bolts gushed into the sky, illuminating the lands beyond the city walls.
And what was revealed amidst the darknessâŠ
âAH?!â
âIt canât beâŠâ
Gasps could be heard on the city walls.
Those who were less mentally resilient collapsed to the ground, with a wet mark and an awful stench appearing between their legs.
Asudo was stunned.
What was revealed beneath the lightning was a sea of white, but this white signified something sinister, terrifying, and deathlyâŠ
An army of skeletons wielding bone swords and bone shields stretched to the horizon, making it impossible to fathom its scale!
ââŠâ
What is going on?
Asudo felt light-headed. He had thought that it was an attack from the Tang army, but now⊠ÆrÄewebnoŃ”Ńl.cÏm
âYoung master!â a slightly older Tibetan soldier suddenly screeched in shock, âItâs the Tang army! Itâs the Anxi army!â
âWhat did you say?â Asudo looked at the Tibetan soldier in confusion.
The Tibetan soldier stared at the familiar silhouettes before him with a trembling profile, too shaken up to answer the question.
White hair, heavy armor, and the dark red flag fluttering amidst the darknessâthose were marks of the Anxi army!
However, his eyes soon fell on the figure marching beneath the flag. Those features on that beautiful faceâŠ
âShu Chuanfeng!â the Tibetan soldier, despite his valiance, screamed in fright like a headless chicken. âItâs Shu Chuanfeng, the commander of the Anxi army! They have returned from hell to get us! Weâre doomed! Weâre all going to die here!â
He started ranting like a madman.
Asudo quickly cast Mind Cleanse on the Tibetan soldier before grabbing the latter and asking, âWhatâs going on? Explain it to me!â
âGhosts. They are all ghosts!â the Tibetan soldier replied in fright. âThey are here to exact vengeance on us!â
Asudo was barely able to grasp what was going on.
Both the Anxi army and Shu Chuanfeng were already dead, but they had now returned with countless skeletons to attack them. Clearly, they had returned as vengeful spirits to reap their lives!
âAhâŠâ Asudo looked at the skeletons with fear in his eyes.
It was not his first encounter with ghosts and the undead, but he had never seen anyone mobilizing the undead as an army, especially not at this scale. He had known that the Tang army was coming, but this was totally different from what he had expected.
This was madness! ÆĐłeewŃbnovel.com
âThe TangsâŠâ
Goosebumps rose all over Asudoâs body. It took a long time before he was able to speak, âDid they have so many tough bones among them?â
He couldnât understand how the Anxi army stood their ground despite being put in a completely hopeless situation, persisting from black-haired youths to white-haired veterans. All the Tibetans exhaled in relief when all the white-haired veterans died, thinking that this was finally over.
Who could have thought that those veterans would return as white-haired ghost horsemen? Even when dead, they continued to brandish their lances and swing their sabers to fight their enemies!
While the soldiers on Shuleâs city walls were panicking, Miazova galloped over to Shu Yichaoâs side and said, âOi, grandson. Thereâs a bit of trouble.â
Gobbling up the Tibetan troops lying in ambush did bulk up Shu Yichaoâs army, but it appeared to have alerted Shule about their presence too. Shule had activated their barriers and lightning defense towers to ward them off.
âThe skeletons you brought are going to suffer heavy casualties,â Miazova said grimly.
Huh? Thatâs good news!
Shu Yichao looked at the sea of skeletons behind him. âWhat a coincidence. Iâve been thinking that they have grown too big recently. Skeletons, charge!â
At his order, the sea of skeletons surged with an unstoppable momentum, looking as if they wouldnât rest until they devoured the world. In the blink of an eye, they were already at the foot of the city walls.
âThey are here!â
âPrepare to counterattack!â
The Tibetan soldiers on the city walls hurriedly operated their defense equipment.
Bzzzt!
The lightning defense tower unleashed a devastating lightning storm upon the sea of skeletons.
Crk crk crk!
It was impossible for the skeletons, with their 0 magic resistance, to withstand the lightning onslaught. In the blink of an eye, most of the charging skeletons were either reduced to cinders or exploded into bits.
Hu!
The Tibetan soldiers breathed a sigh of relief.
âThatâs good, thatâs good.â
Many patted their chests in relief. That nearly scared their souls out of them. They had thought they were goners when they saw the sea of white bones charging at their city, but the skeletons turned out to be weaker than they looked.
Despite their terrifying appearance, they were weaker than mere farmers. They were practically useless except for their sheer number.
Those stationed in the sentry posts must have panicked at the sight of these monsters and fled in fright.
HoweverâŠ
âHm?â
Despite being bombarded by lightning defense towers, melted by the barrier, and torched by beast heads on the city gatesâthere was now a thick layer of bone ashes lying beneath the city wallsâthe skeletons displayed no signs of retreating.
The skeletons continued to fearlessly throw themselves at the city, much to the Tibetan soldiersâ shock.
âThis is bad!â Asudo blurted out.
Are these skeletons similar to the warrior puppets created by master? Do they have no mind of their own, know not of fatigue or fear, and exist for the sole sake of taking down their enemies?
If thatâs the case, the only way we can win this battle is to either kill the mage behind this or eliminate every last one of these skeletons.
Asudo immediately ruled out the second option, knowing that it was an impossible task given the sheer number of skeletons he was seeing.
As for the first optionâŠ
That man beneath the Great Tang flag should be the mage commanding these monsters, right? But it looks like Iâll have to first accomplish the second option in order to reach himâŠ
âThey have come prepared.â Asudo sighed.
They hadnât even quelled the unease in the city when these monsters suddenly struck.
Thereâs no choice.
Asudo gritted his teeth and made up his mind. He turned to the warriors and mages and instructed, âYou hold the fort here first. These monsters will take some time to breach the city gates. Iâll first head to the City Lord Manor to help my father suppress the rebellions before returning with reinforcement.â
âAh?â A Tibetan soldier looked at Asudo in confusion. âYoung master, are you only bringing fifteen people with you? Will they be enough?â
âThey are enough,â Asudo replied with a proud smile.
